The Pawleys Island Historic District is home to a plethora of 18th-century houses, adding to the town's distinctive character. History of Pawley's Island

Pawleys Island, South Carolina, is an iconic summer resort, recognized as one of the oldest on the East Coast. In the early 1700s, rice planter families who owned plantations on nearby rivers were the first to settle in the area. Understanding the unhealthiness of remaining on the rivers during summer, they began moving their families, livestock, and belongings to Pawleys Island from May until the first frost in November, unknowingly avoiding malaria.

Over the years, the charm of the leisurely lifestyle has endured on Pawleys Island. The historic district preserves 12 residences, dating from the late 1700s to the mid-1800s, which stands as a testament to its rich history. The town continues to be renowned for its relaxed, shoeless, and laid-back atmosphere, where crabbing in the adjacent creeks, fishing, ghost stories, rope hammocks, and the pristine, wide beach and sand dunes all add to the idyllic ambiance.

Pawley's Island Beach

The serene beach at Pawleys Island is highly regarded for its pristine condition and exceptional surf. The area also boasts approximately ten exceptional golf courses and a large tennis complex within a five-mile radius. For fishing enthusiasts, there are opportunities to fish in the surf or from two marsh bridges, and there are three launch boat ramps on the island. Pawleys is a perfect family beach, with activities such as crabbing, shelling, biking, and canoeing or kayaking. The atmosphere is relaxed and unhurried, with a town speed limit of 25 mph for maximum safety. At high tide, visitors can explore the salt marsh with their own kayaks or rent one. Swimming, fishing, and sunbathing are the primary activities of the day, and at night, guests can enjoy dining out, engaging in conversations on screened porches, shopping in boutiques on the mainland, or taking leisurely strolls along the beach.
